Monica’s friendship story

Monica Lamb volunteers with the Friends of Castle Parks, an It’s Your Neighbourhood group in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland. Being part of this group has helped Monica combat the loneliness she felt when her husband passed away.

I really look forward to Tuesday each week when I join my newly-found friends. I know I will be able to chat and see other people while enjoying gardening in my local parks.

“I hadn’t realised how lonely it could be living on your own. My husband Ken died a couple of years ago. We had been married nearly 50 years.”

Monica Lamb has found friendship through community gardening

The Friends of Castle Parks have made me feel so welcome and I have made many good friends since I joined three years ago.

“I have always been a keen gardener and have now found companionship and a new sense of purpose through gardening with other people. We meet all year round and enjoy our lunchtime sandwiches together while watching the birds.”

The jobs that I enjoy most are weeding and sweeping up leaves in the autumn while chatting with my friends and the many visitors who come to the parks, which are situated either side of the railway station and the castle ruins.

If you’re thinking about volunteering with a community gardening group I’d say just go along and introduce yourself. I’m certain you will be met by many happy friendly people, pleased to see you.
